Perspectives on the Provincetown Art Colony, Deborah Forman
Two-Volume Set
Schiffer Publishing Ltd
$125, plus $10 shipping/handling
Temporarily out of stock, but available through the
Arful Hand Gallery @ CCMA
The most comprehensive review of the Provincetown Art Colony to date, this two volume set is complete with conversations with many artists, including Robert Motherwell, Jack Tworkov, Red Grooms, Raphael Soyer, and Chaim Gross, and more than 300 images of works by those artists, as well as Childe Hassam, Hans Hofmann, Franz Kline, Adolph Gottlieb, Edward Hopper, and numerous others.
In volume one, Deborah Forman traces the history of these artists from 1899, when Charles Hawthorne opened his Cape Cod School of Art, through the struggles among traditionalists, impressionists, modernists, and abstract expressionists. Volume two picks up at mid-century and continues to present day with discussions and art by a number of Hofmann students, as well as Arnold Newman, Joel Meyerowitz, Paul Resika, Michael Mazur, Anne Packard, and many others.
Throughout this valuable resource, Provincetown’s rich art heritage is captured through more than sixty personal accounts from artists, collectors, gallery owners, and writers who shared their stories, views of art, and love of Provincetown with the author.
“It was a great opportunity and pleasure to meet and talk with the artists and writers,” Ms. Forman says. “My first interview with Robert Motherwell, a longtime seasonal resident in Provincetown, inspired me to go forward and meet and write about many others. It became clear to me as I talked to these artists the important role Provincetown played on the American, and, yes, the world art scene,” she adds. “Like so many, I fell in love with the town and saw how important it was to tell the story.”
Deborah Forman has been covering the art colony in Provincetown for thirty years. She has interviewed hundreds of artists for as many articles. Her articles have been published in the Cape Cod Times, Cape Cod VIEW magazine, Boston Magazine and Art New England. She lives on Cape Cod, not far from the Provincetown art colony.
