A Classical Approach to Portrait and Figure Drawing with Paul Mohr

(4) Saturdays, July 6 – July 27, from 10:00 – 1:00 pm.

Member $165/ Non-Member $180

This four-week course is offered in conjunction with the exhibition SHOWMAN WITH A PAINTBRUSH: The Life and Art of Arthur V. Diehl, on view May 16 – July 23, 2024.

Working with instructor Paul Mohr, students gain a firm grounding in the mechanical ‘nuts and bolts’ of drawing, and just as important, the mental aspects of seeing, understanding, and interpreting how the light around us describes what we see. Understanding and mastering foundational skills will inspire students to see and respond to the world around them with intensified interest and curiosity.

In this four-week course, students work on the variety and harmony of shapes, values, edges, light, shade, and shadows. We work out different methods of measuring objects and placing them in context. We discuss how these things we see are affected by color and color temperature. All of the fundamental aspects of good drawing are covered.

Students will tour and discuss the exhibition with Paul, SHOWMAN WITH A PAINTBRUSH: The Life and Art of Arthur V. Diehl. Nearly one hundred years since Diehl painted in Provincetown, this exhibition features his masterful, atmospheric and often historically accurate paintings that capture the importance of Provincetown as a major fishing port between the mid-1800s and the 1920s. It includes paintings from Provincetown, Chatham, New York City, Boston, and locations in Europe. Curated by Diehl’s granddaughter, Eugenia Diehl Pell, this exhibition will coincide with the release of Diehl’s definitive biography, Arthur V. Diehl.

“My philosophy as an instructor is to demonstrate the methods and tools used in the practice of art. This is based primarily on observation from life. I stress three things to my students: First, the practice of art is part skill, which can be learned, and the other part is the passion you feel for your subject. The second is to draw the subjects that you are most passionate about, whether it’s people, still-life compositions, or landscapes. Your enthusiasm for the subject will keep you working long enough to build your drawing skills. Finally, learn to appreciate the mistakes you make. They are critical in showing you the things you need to work on. The only mistake that you can truly make is to not draw. All the others are good.”

The Cape Cod Museum of Art is committed to making Art accessible to everyone in the Cape Cod Community. The Museum School Scholarship Fund provides tuition assistance to qualified, year-round Cape Cod residents ages 6 and up. Click here to apply.
