What is gypsy jazz? It's uplifting, fun, melodic, and emotional music. Enjoyable for general audience and kids, and also appreciative for advanced listeners. You may not know the term "gypsy jazz", but if you hear the music, I bet you will say, "Uh..., I get it. I've heard it before. I love this kind of music!"

Combining the sounds of jazz and gypsy music with a rich harmonic blend of violin and clarinet , 440 expands on the tradition of gypsy jazz established by Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli. A compilation of danceable swing standards from the era of Fats Waller, Cole Porter, George Gershwin & Benny Goodman and captivating originals by the band.

This is an in-person concert at the Cape Cod Museum of Art. It will also live stream on Zoom.

Tomoko Iwamoto, leader and violinist, has been in Boston jazz scene for more than 25 years. With a strong background as a classical violinist, she expanded her repertoire in jazz while studying Jazz Composition and Arranging at Berklee College of Music as a scholarship student. She has played with Hypnotick Clambake and A La Modal, and currently the first violinist and composer & arranger for J-Way (jazz string quartet) and Axis Strings (Top 40 cover band). She provided arrangements and performed as a soloist with Mood Swings Orchestra (jazz big band), and wrote many grade school level arrangements for Newton All-City Orchestra. Besides being a jazz musician, Tomoko continues to perform classical music with Plymouth Philharmonic, Lexington Symphony, New England Philharmonic, Woodvale String Quartet, just to name a few.

Mark Chenevert has been playing clarinet and tenor sax in the Boston area for some forty years now,working with various projects including Limbo Race (1982 WBCN Rumble winners), Willie Alexander, and Hypnotic Clambake. Jack Soref became captivated by Django’s music after two life-changing visits to the Django Reinhardt festival in Samois-sur-Seine in 2002 and ‘03. As a teenager he managed to pick up tips and tricks from players such as Robin Nolan, Jan Brouwer, Jonny Hepbir, and Alfonso Ponticelli. Subsequently, Jack moved to Boston to continue his studies at the Berklee College of Music. For half of 2011, frère Jacques studied the music of Django Reinhardt at its source by moving to Paris, France. While there he performed with old masters (Boulou & Florin) and young bucks of the scene on the Seine. Jack has since performed in the Django style with many bands in the Boston area. He tours and records as member of Ameranouche.

Jack can be seen regularly in the greater Boston area with everyone  playing Gypsy jazz. Out in the wider world he has performed as an accompanist for Gypsy Jazz luminaries like Joscho Stephan, Tim Kliphius, Gonzalo Bergara, Jason Anick, Olli Soikkeli, Adrien Moignard, Ben Powell, Aurélien Bouly, and Titi Bamberger.

For over 30 years Jim Guttmann has performed in a wide range of venues from smokey dives to Carnegie Hall. He is a bassist of the Klezmer Conservatory Band and has performed and recorded with Itzhak Perlman and Joel Grey. In addition to working with KCB he is currently performing klezmer music with Andy Statman, Alicia Svigals’ Klezmer Fiddle Express and Art Bailey’s Orkestra Popilar. He is a founding member of the Really Eclectic String Quartet and has worked with nationally renowned entertainers and musicians, including Eartha Kitt, Mark Murphy, Johnny Shines, James Cotton, Matt Glaser, Russ Barenberg and the Artie Shaw Band. For many years he performed with the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra; in 1999, he premiered Gunther Schuller’s duet for trumpet & contrabass “Fantastical Colloquy.” He also served as the musical director and bassist for the Tufts University Jazz Festival’s Soul to Soul: A Tribute to Aretha Franklin.

Mr. Guttmann has studied performance with Edwin Barker and Dave Holland, harmony with Richard Cornell and techniques for improvisation with Charlie Banacos. He is a Grammy Award Nominee and the recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts grant to study the arco solo tradition in jazz bass playing. He currently serves as Managing Director of the Klezmer Conservatory Band and the President of the Klezmer Conservatory Foundation.
