Master Teacher Hans Hofmann’s theory of push/pull is the catalyst for two generations of Abstract Expressionists in both New York and Provincetown from 1938 to 1957. Artists and educators Laura Shabott and Alana Barrett contemporize his theory in this course.

The 1-day workshop begins with a lecture about Hofmann and his students, moving into guided exercises with a model as our prompt. Artists will leave with a deeper understanding of how their lines, shapes, and compositions push and pull on a two-dimensional surface. A one-hour online critique in a scheduled group Zoom meeting will complete the course in an insightful and inspiring way (scheduled after the workshop).

Suggested Supply List: You will work mostly on a flat surface instead of an easel.

  • One 18 x 24” sized white acid-free drawing pad with at least 25 sheets. Strathmore Windpower, XL Sketch are two of many options. There is great benefit in seeing how other people approach drawing on the same-sized surface.
  • One package of Vine Charcoal: Grumbacher Soft 3-Sticks
  • Other charcoals: for ex: Derwent XL Charcoal Blocks (very dusty but rich).
  • One Artist Chamois
  • Two Faber Castelli Kneadable Art Erasers
  • One Acid-Free Glue Stick: Avery, Blick, 3M are good.
  • Scotch Tape (temporary so any kind will do)
  • Scissors
  • Gloves (like for food prep)
  • Hand wipes for hands and face
  • Water-based acrylic pens, markers, oil pastels, or colored collage pieces

Laura Shabott is a graduate from School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University. Figure drawing is the foundation of her practice based in Provincetown. Shabott is represented by Berta Walker Gallery and is including in group shows at PAAM, the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University, and the Provincetown Commons.

She co-teaches with Miami-based Alana Barrett in courses and programs that empower people to create art and begin or renew an engaged, vibrant artist practice. For more information, go to www.shabottbarrett.com.
